Our Story

It’s been said that if you’re lucky enough to find a job, or start a business, doing something  that you truly enjoy and are passionate about, that you will never work a day in your life. I have found this to be absolutely true up to this point. I am a transitioning veteran of 24 years and set to retire at the end of 2020. I spent my entire career in the Naval Special Warfare community and never once did I think of it as work. It was a lifestyle that my family and I lived and loved. My wife, Michelle, has been by my side every step of the way…literally…we started dating a few months before I left for boot camp.

We started out in San Diego and spent an amazing 7 years out there before we moved here to Virginia Beach in 2005. The next 15 years were fast paced and challenging. I was fully engaged with my career and gone often while Michelle raised our two children, Zoey and Kye. In what sometimes seems like a “blink of the eye” it was 2020. We started to make the transition and prepare for retirement from the military.

Michelle and I began to have those conversations about what’s next and what is it that we really want to do with our next chapter of life. I had just spent the last 24 years doing exactly what I wanted to and never felt like I worked a day in my life and I wanted to keep that feeling going. So we asked ourselves, what are we passionate about? What types of activities do we absolutely love doing and could we start a business that involves them in some way? The answers quickly came to these questions. We love and live a very active lifestyle and always have. More specifically we love being in, on, and around the water any way and anytime we can. We’ve lived on the coast all of our adult lives and have taken full advantage of the recreational water activities available here in Virginia Beach and the surrounding areas. I started surfing in 2010 and was instantly hooked. One day, a year or two later, my wife brought home a paddle board which I quickly came to enjoy  just as much as surfing. Whether we’re exploring the Back Bay on a kayak or following a pod of dolphins on a paddle board as we watch the sunrise, being on the water has come to be a constant craving in our life. So, back to our question of “how can we start a business that involves something we are truly passionate about?”

One day Michelle and I were driving around the community of Sandbridge. We had been at the beach, with our paddle boards of course, and were now just cruising around enjoying the nice weather and watching people come and go from their beach house rentals. All of a sudden Michelle turns, looks at me and says…”We should start a rental company for paddle boards and kayaks. We love paddle boarding, we know paddle boarding, we care about paddle boarding and living an active lifestyle.” I sat there for a minute pondering what she had just said and it became clear to me that she had just figured it out. This is how Why Knot Rentals came to be the next chapter for us. Find a job, or start a business, that involves something you love and are passionate about and you will never work a day in your life!
